A+D's Pasadena City Hall Wedding That Took an Unexpected Turn (And Turned Out Perfectly)
Sometimes the most beautiful wedding days are the ones that don’t go exactly as planned. That was certainly the case for A+D, whose intimate Pasadena wedding unfolded with unexpected changes, spontaneous decisions, and an abundance of love. As a Southern California wedding photographer, I’ve learned that adaptability is just as important as artistry—and this day was the perfect reminder of that.
A+D had originally envisioned saying their vows at the iconic Pasadena City Hall. It’s one of the most beloved elopement locations in the area for good reason: the grand columns, soft light, and European architecture make it a photographer’s dream. But when we arrived that afternoon, we were met with locked gates and a sudden change of plans. The building had unexpectedly closed its grounds to the public, leaving us—bride, groom, and camera in hand—without a ceremony spot.
But weddings, especially intimate ones like this, are about the heart behind the day. And while the location had to shift, the love was still very much present.

A Quiet Ceremony, A Loud First Kiss
Though the formal ceremony location had to shift, A+D still said their vows just outside the Pasadena City Hall—off to the side, beneath the grand arches that were still accessible. It was quick, simple, and heartfelt. There were no rows of chairs or elaborate florals, just the two of them, a few close loved ones, and a promise.
And their first kiss? Absolutely nailed it.
Making Magic Across the Street
With calm energy and a quick-thinking mindset, I offered an alternative location for their couple portraits: All Saints Episcopal Church, just steps away from City Hall. I had passed by it before and always admired its dramatic Gothic Revival architecture—tall arched doorways, heavy wooden doors, and shadowed alcoves that evoke a quiet kind of romance. It wasn’t part of the original plan, but it turned out to be the perfect backdrop for their couple portraits.
What could have been a stressful moment turned into something deeply special. The stone textures and historic elegance of the church created the kind of timeless imagery A+D had hoped for. It was a small twist of fate that actually elevated the visual narrative of their wedding day—and it reminded me why I always scout for multiple visual storylines, even for intimate elopements.
We spent time exploring the angles of the church together—A in her effortlessly elegant gown, D in a classic dark suit. The result? Dozens of portraits that felt editorial, cinematic, and undeniably romantic. The soft light filtered through A's pearl-studded veil in a romantic and cinematic way, and the architecture framed them in ways that felt both intimate and grand.
A Twinkle-Lit Reception in the Courtyard
The celebration continued at a cozy backyard-style venue with a charming courtyard enveloped in string lights and lush greenery. It was the kind of space that feels like a secret garden—intimate, glowing, and perfect for an open-air reception.
A+D’s first dance beneath the twinkle lights felt straight out of a movie. Guests sipped drinks under trees strung with lights while music filled the courtyard. The evening moved seamlessly from emotional toasts to spirited dancing, and I captured it all with a blend of documentary storytelling and editorial composition. Candid laughter, golden light flares, joyful embraces—these are the moments I live for.
Throughout the night, I made sure to step back and let moments unfold naturally, while still finding ways to frame the couple beautifully in their environment. That’s what I love most about photographing weddings like this: crafting images that feel both effortless and elegant.
