When you step inside Castle Green in Pasadena, you can feel the weight of its history. Built in 1898 as part of the famed Hotel Green, this Moorish, Spanish, and Victorian-influenced architectural gem has hosted decades of soirées, celebrations, and—yes—its fair share of whispered ghost stories. Some say the basement has a haunted past; we didn’t encounter any spirits that day, but I will admit, the dim stairwell down to the basement had such a spooky vibe that we left it to the imagination and stayed upstairs in the light.
For P + C, this venue wasn’t just a backdrop—it was a living, breathing character in their wedding story. And photographing a Castle Green wedding is a dream for any wedding photographer in Southern California. The rich textures, ornate woodwork, jewel-toned interiors, and history-soaked walls practically beg to be captured in deep, cinematic tones. My editorial documentary style thrives in spaces like this—clean, timeless portraits balanced with moody, artful compositions that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a film still.
Getting Ready
We began the day in the bridal suite, where soft light poured through glass doors and illuminated P in her gown—a perfect moment to capture the kind of clean, editorial portraits I’m known for.
Meanwhile, C and his groomsmen took advantage of the ground floor lobby for portraits that played with the warm, saturated hues of the space—burnished wood, intricate tile, and the dramatic light filtering in through tall windows.
First Look in the Grand Entrance
Their first look happened on the sweeping staircase in the grand entrance—an iconic Castle Green wedding spot. The moment was tender and quiet, with the building’s timeless charm wrapping around them like a silent witness.
C waited at the base of Castle Green’s sweeping staircase, the space echoing with a sense of grandeur. P began her descent, each step bringing her closer, her gown trailing behind her like something out of an old Hollywood film, and C’s face lit up as he saw her for the first time. There’s something truly magical about a first look on a grand staircase—it’s as much about the setting as the emotion, and here, both were unforgettable.
Piano Serenade & Intimate Portraits
One of the most personal moments of the day came during portraits in the music room. C, a talented pianist, sat at the grand piano and began to play Here Comes the Bride for P. She smiled, then her eyes welled up—it was pure, unposed emotion, and exactly the kind of genuine connection I love to document candidly.
The interiors of Castle Green are a gift for a photographer—the ruby-red curtains, hand-carved details, and tall windows create both drama and intimacy. Here, my approach was to combine straightforward, timeless portraits with more artful frames—slightly moody, cinematic compositions that tell the story beyond the obvious.
This is something I encourage couples to consider for their wedding photos: mix the classic with the unexpected. Those layered visual narratives will only grow richer with time.
Bridal Party
The bridesmaids, in soft pink dresses, popped beautifully against the lush greens of the outdoor lawn and the ornate façade of Castle Green. It’s a tip I often give bridesmaids—choose a tone that complements both your florals and your surroundings, because those color harmonies truly sing in photographs.
After group portraits, we shifted focus to bridal portraits. P looked radiant, her gown flowing effortlessly in the afternoon light. The delicate henna on her hands added a subtle, intricate detail that spoke to her heritage without overpowering the overall look. These portraits are where I love to balance my clean, editorial style with romantic, atmospheric compositions—capturing both the grandeur of Castle Green and the intimate elegance of the bride herself.
Ceremony on the Grounds
The ceremony itself unfolded under the California sun, framed by delicate light pink and purple florals. Guests were surrounded by history, the historic towers peeking through the trees, and the air buzzing with celebration.

Rooftop Views & Round Tower Romance
After the ceremony, we explored the grounds out front Castle Green, capturing characteristic elements of the historic architecture and the lush greenery.
Then we headed to the rooftop - pausing for a quick photo op in the old school elevator. Because elevator wedding portraits are just too much fun to pass up.
Up on the roof of Castle Green we were met with sprawling views where the city of Pasadena stretched out below us. The golden hour light wrapped them in warmth, and from there, we stepped into the round tower—a space with towering columns and an almost secret, old-world feel.
I also love incorporating a mix of artful black and white images that give a timeless yet nostalgic feeling of movement and emotion. These were some of my favorite images of the day: romantic, moody, and full of atmosphere, capturing that golden hour glow.
A Reception Filled with Light & Live Music
The reception unfolded indoors beneath sheer twinkle curtains that glowed like stardust as evening set in. The couple shared a sweet and graceful first dance before a live band took over, filling the space with a vibrant, almost Gatsby-era energy. Guests laughed, danced, and raised their glasses under the glow of the lights.
Their first dance was lit softly, their joy punctuated by the live band that kept the energy high all night. For the dance floor, I used a lens drag technique to capture the swirl of movement and lights—images that feel as alive as the night itself.
They closed the evening with a grand bubble exit—guests cheering, laughter echoing off the historic walls, and the bubbles catching the last bit of light before disappearing into the night.
